Montreal / Montreal

Ich bin mal wieder auf beruflich unterwegs – diesmal hat es mich nach Montreal verschlagen. Es erstaunt mich immer wieder, welchen Einfluss der Golfstrom (ok, genau genommen der Nordatlantikstrom) doch auf das west-europäische Klima hat. Er wirkt sozusagen als “Warmwasserheizung” fuer Europa (naeheres hier). Montreal liegt etwa auf dem gleichen Breitengrad wie Bordeaux (Suedfrankreich), aber um diese Jahreszeit ist es in Montreal noch empfindlich kalt. Die Nachttemperaturen liegen noch unter dem Gefrierpunkt, und an den Baeumen zeigt sich jetzt der erste Hauch von Gruen. In Mitteleuropa sind die Waelder schon richtig gruen… Gut, dass ich an Handschuhe, Schal und Muetze gedacht habe.

I am travelling again (for business). This time, I ended up in Montreal. It always astonishes me which influence the Gulf stream (yes, I know, the North Atlantik Drift) has on the climate in western Europe. It kind of works as a heating systems (see e.g. here). Montreal is located on the same latitude as Bordeaux (southern France), but at this time of the year, it is still fairly cold in Montreal – the night temperatures are still below freezing, and the leaves are only just emerging on the trees. In central Europe, the forests are already green… I remembered to bring gloves, scarf and bonnet.

Den heutigen Sonntag habe ich im botanischen Garten und in der Altstadt von Montreal verbracht. Davon werde ich in den naechsten Tagen noch Bilder zeigen. Hier schon mal meine Mitbringsel:

Und natuerlich Ahorn sirup. Einmal ganz “normaler” Ahornsirup, und dann dunkler Ahornsirup, der etwas konzentrierter ist, und zu einer anderen Jahreszeit geerntet wurde (wenn mehr Zucker im Pflanzensaft vorhanden ist).

And maple sirup, of course. Once “standard” maple sirup, as well as dark (amber) maple sirup, which has a higher concentration of sugar, and was harvested at a different time of year (when there is more sugar in the sap).
