Einmal um die Welt / Around the World

After having circumnavigated the globe, I finally arrived back home on Monday evening (totally jet-lagged). I did not really fly around the globe once – rather, I followed the polar circle. I’ve crossed Greenland, the Bering Strait, and Siberia…
Visit here to see a few pictures from my trip to Vancouver.

Leg 1: Paris – Amsterdam – Vancouver.
Across the North Atlantic and Greenland.

Leg 2: Vancouver – Tokyo – Fukuoka
Crossing the Bering Strait and the Date Line.

Leg 3: Fukuoka – Amsterdam – Paris
Across Siberia and Scandinavia

And how does one pass the time on those flights (between 10 and 13 hours long)? Very simple – one knits. One-and-a-half pairs on the way from Paris to Vancouver, a cowl (Vancouver Rain Cowl, knit from yarn bought in Vancouver) from Vancouver to Fukuoka, and the last bit of sock on the way back to Paris. And as I was upgraded to business class (lucky me!) I was pampered with good food. And I listened to a very interesting audio-book – The Story of Music. A history of music, ranging from pre-history to today.

Pattern: Vancouver Rain Cowl
Yarn: Viking of Norway – Nordlys

Pattern in detail

Wearing the cowl

Monkey Socks – finished!

I like the colours of the yarn, and the pattern.

Lunch on the plane – appetisers

Lunch on the plane – main course.

Zu Hause hatte sich nichts geaendert 😉

Nothing much had changed at home 😉

Interesting flight! How long did it take?

Total flying time was more than 40 hours… Now add to that all the travelling to and from airports and waiting times… Makes 2 days worth of travel time for 6 days of meetings…

Quite a lot of time on the plane then! I was going to flying Leeds – Schipol – Fukuoka – Tokyo in April but KLM have just cancelled that flight so am now missing out Fukuoka, which is a shame. Did you get to see that city?

I got to see Fukuoka on a previous trip – I visited the older part of Town and the National Museum http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyushu_National_Museum
It is outside the city in a really nice park, and the museum was well worth a visit!
