Die verstrickte Dienstagsfrage Woche 25/2015

Es gibt mal wieder eine Antwort auf die Dienstagsfrage von mir – diesmal aus Tokyo. Das Wollschaf möchte wissen:

Wer hat es nicht schon einmal erlebt: Brav eine Maschenprobe gestrickt und das fertige Strickstück passte später doch nicht 😦
Welche Tipps habt ihr für eine exakte Maschenprobe?

Und an alle, die auf einem großen Stück grundsätzlich lockerer oder fester stricken als bei ihrer Maschenprobe: Wie handhabt ihr diese Abweichungen; was macht ihr, damit es zum Schluß trotzdem passt?

Ja, das ist mir schon passiert – bei meiner ersten Deco. Ich hatte meine Maschenprobe glatt rechts gestrickt, statt im Muster wie angegeben. Nach der Hälfte kam mir die Jacke doch sehr klein vor – und ich habe sie aufgeribbelt und nochmal neu gestrickt. Bei der 2. Version ist mir aufgefallen, warum die Jacke zu klein geworden ist: das Hebemaschen zieht sich zusammen, und ich musste das Garn mit Nadelstärke 3,5 mm statt 3mm stricken, um auf die erforderliche Maschenprobe zu kommen.

Meine Tipps für die exakte Maschenprobe:

1. die Maschenprobe ausreichend gross stricken
2. die Maschenprobe waschen und trocknen
3. die Maschenprobe im angegebenen Muster stricken

Aber am Ende kommt es nicht auf die exekte Maschenprobe an, sondern darauf, dass Gestrick “richtig” ist – also nicht zu fest und dicht, aber auch nicht zu “löchrig” ist.

Wenn die ersten paar Zentimeter gestrickt sind, wird natürlich auch direkt am Strickstück nochmal gemessen, ob die Maschenprobe noch übereinstimmt.

What tips do you have for a proper gauge swatch?

And for all those, whose gauge in a larger piece is different from their gauge swatch: how do you deal with these differences, and what do you do to ensure that the finished item fits in the end?

It happened to my when I knit me first Deco cardigan. I had knit the gauge swatch in stockinette stitch, and not in the stitch pattern, as indicated. The cardigan seemed to be awfully small after a while, so I ripped it out and started again. When I knit the 2. version, I realised why this had happened – the stitch pattern was a slip stitch pattern that tightens and is thus narrower than a stockinette stitch pattern with the same number of stitches. I had to knit the yarn with 3,5mm needles (and not 3mm needles) to get gauge.

My hints for a proper gauge swatch:

1. knit your gauge swatch sufficiently big
2. wash and dry your gauge swatch
3. knit your gauge swatch in the stitch pattern indicated in the pattern

But in the end, proper gauge is not the important thing, but the fabric you are creating with the yarn and the needles. Anything that is to knit too tight or too loosely is not what you want, even if the gauge is “right”.

And once I have knit the first few centimetres, I measure again my number of rows and stitches to make sure that everything works out.
